Why isn’t it a straight line
(2024)Single-channel video with sound, 4 mins 45 secs.
“Why isn’t it a straight line?” unfolds as a fractured narrative, an algorithmic spiral navigating the tension between control and chaos. At its core lies a personal exploration of Buddhist philosophy, with the pursuit of Nirvana not as a fixed destination, but as a threshold. Here, centrifugal force becomes more than a physical phenomenon; it stands as a metaphor for the perpetual counter-rotation of life and death, desire and release.
The video is composed of 8 scenes, each serving as a spatial abstraction of the Noble Eightfold Path. Metaphysical concepts are disassembled and reconfigured through looping temporal structures. Like a carousel, the work simulates forward motion while revolving in place, inviting viewers into a recursive system where illusion and reality fold into one another.
Rooted in embodied practice, each element, space, rhythm, duration, and character acts as an avatar of the teachings. The work does not seek resolution. Instead, it resists it. Why isn’t it a straight line? The question remains unanswered, deliberately so. What unfolds is not a linear path, but a meditation on feedback loops, impermanence, and the endlessly transforming nature of becoming.
This poster is a narrative map that places the human world at the center, encircled by heaven and hell. It draws inspiration from a diagram in Einstein Meets Buddha Found.
